the owners were very welcoming and provided helpful recommendations for local places of interest. the breakfast served was incredibly filling and a sheer delight to the taste buds. Another huge plus is that the hotel's location is absolutely perfect as it's just a short walk away from the snow slopes and hot springs.
The hotel could do with some renovations as the building is starting to look a bit dated. the absence of a lift can be an inconvenience for some guests, especially if they are allotted rooms on the upper floors.

the location is convenient for skiing, with easy access to the slopes and restaurants. the owners are warm and welcoming, providing great tourist advice and hospitality. the traditional Japanese room is cozy and comes with storage space for all our skiing gear. We loved the Japanese-style breakfast and the onsen is a great way to unwind after a day on the slopes. the eclectic collection of hifi equipment and sake adds to the unique charm of this lovely inn.
Some noise from neighboring rooms can be heard due to thin walls, but this is common in traditional Japanese inns.

The hotel is conveniently located near the ski resort, making it easy to hit the slopes. The couple that owns the hotel is very friendly and welcoming, making the stay enjoyable. The room was clean and cozy, with a heater already on when I arrived. Plus, the wife answered all my questions and concerns, going above and beyond to make sure I had a comfortable stay.
The walls may be a little thin, as I could hear my noisy neighbors at times. , for those who struggle with directions, the roads can get confusing and it's easy to get lost.

We had the most incredible stay at Shi Ya in Yamagata. The peaceful small town atmosphere was perfect for a winter getaway. The breathtaking snow scenery and the opportunity to witness the Snow Monsters during the day made our stay even more magical. The kindness and hospitality of the owners truly touched our hearts, especially when they went out of their way to cook Udon for us despite the language barrier. The traditional feel of the ryokan, with its nostalgic antiques and eclectic collection, added to the charm. The view of the ski slopes from our room was a delightful surprise. The delicious breakfast, particularly the nasu, left us feeling truly honored to have stayed in such a place. Although we didn't see many other guests during our stay, this added a sense of exclusivity. The only drawback was the cold temperature in the rooms during November, but with the heating on, it was manageable. we highly recommend staying at Shi Ya for an authentic and memorable Japanese ryokan experience.
